Welcome to the Plano Drumline Audition Workshops!
Found here is Drumline Workshop information for next year's 9th - 12th grade percussionists planning on
performing within the marching band percussion sections at Plano Senior High School, Clark High school, or Vines High School.
The material presented here will be covered in our drumline workshop sessions, however, this online study will
give everyone a headstart into our drumline audition preparation. Each exercise is presented in full percussion
section format, including the play-alongs. Enjoy!
Please familiarize yourself with the following terminology.
Tenors - Short term for the Multi-Tenor Drums (Set of 5 drums)
6" Drum - Generally referred to as the onomatopoeia "Spock"
10" Drum - Drum #1
12" Drum - Drum #2
13" Drum - Drum #3
14" Drum - Drum #4
Bass - short term for the Bass Drum Line; 4-5 different sizes
Drum #1 - 18" Bass Drum
Drum #2 - 20" Bass Drum
Drum #3 - 22" Bass Drum
Drum #4 - 24" Bass Drum
Drum #5 - 26" or 28" Bass Drum
"Around" - Tenors play "around" the drums in a predetermined pattern (read or taught by rote)
"Drum #1" - Term used with a tenor line notifying the player(s) to play their part only on drum 1; designation adapts to the other drums as needed.
"1, Around" - Refers to the tenor line sequence where a pattern is played the first time through on drum #1, then when repeated, the part is played in a predetermined pattern around the drums.
"1, Around, 2, Around" - Tenor line sequence where pattern is played on drum #1, then in a predetermined pattern around the drums, followed by the pattern played on drum #2, followed by around the drums again.
"Unison" - The bass line members play their part at the same time, at times instead of a predetermined "split."
"Split" - When the bass line players takes a series of rhythms and "splits" them between the different sized drums. (read or taught by rote)
